Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply as an incoming first-year UC San Diego student?

Yes!
Once you have committed to UC San Diego, you are welcome to apply to the College Corps fellowship program.

Can I apply as a new transfer UC San Diego student?

Yes!
All undergraduate transfer students are eligible for the College Corps fellowship program and are encouraged to apply as long as they have at least one academic year to complete before graduation.

How would this program impact my financial aid?

Each student's financial aid package is different. We work closely with financial aid to ensure that applicants are eligible according to program criteria and that participating will not negatively impact their financial assistance. The College Corps living stipend is packaged as part of a student's Offer of Self Help (OSH) and takes the place of loans and work-study, NOT grants.

What if I don't have enough room in my financial aid package for the living stipend?

If a student is accepted into College Corps but does not have enough room in their financial aid package, they should contact Brianna Garcia (b9garcia@ucsd.edu) from the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office for personalized advising to understand how the $7,000 living stipend portion of the fellowship will impact their specific situation.

How should I plan to complete 450 hours over the course of the year?

There will be a multi-day orientation at the start of academic year plus regular meetings and community-building opportunities throughout the year that will count for hours. You will need to organize your schedule each quarter to be able to serve roughly 15 hours per week at your Community Host Partner site during their business hours. We recommend having mornings/afternoons open or 1-2 full days available if at all possible.

What if I am forced to drop out of the program?

Fellows receive financial compensation for their hours served on an ongoing basis. Should a fellow need to discontinue their participation in the program, they are ineligible to receive the remaining balance of the living stipend as well as the $3,000 educational award.
